How often can Tylenol or Motrin be given, and when is it time to call?

The supported Tylenol liquids use a 4-hour interval while symptoms last, with no more than 5 doses in 24 hours. The supported Motrin liquids use 6–8 hours if needed, with no more than 4 times a day. Those are separate product directions, not a combined schedule. Ask a doctor for Tylenol or Children’s Motrin under 2 years or under 24 lb, and for Infants’ Motrin under 6 months or under 12 lb.

Which bottle has which timing?

Read the amount, interval, daily limit and warnings together for the exact product. The interval does not determine the amount or establish that the medicine is appropriate for a particular child.

Does every dose need to be given once medicine is started?

No. These labels describe symptom-based use. They do not instruct you to keep giving the maximum number after symptoms no longer need treatment. Do not shorten the interval or add a second medicine because symptoms return. Ask the child’s clinician if relief is not adequate or their prescribed plan is unclear.

How many days are too many?

The Tylenol labels say to stop and ask a doctor if pain worsens or lasts more than 5 days, or fever worsens or lasts more than 3 days. Motrin says to stop and ask if there is no relief in the first 24 hours, or if pain or fever worsens or lasts more than 3 days. New symptoms, redness or swelling also warrant stopping and asking. Sore throat has its own earlier warnings.

Should I wait that long before calling about fever?

No. Package duration warnings are not instructions to wait when a child is getting worse. The AAP advises calling if fever lasts more than 24 hours in a child younger than 2, or more than 3 days in a child age 2 or older. A baby under 3 months with a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher needs prompt medical evaluation.

Do these intervals apply to babies or store brands automatically?

No. The supported Tylenol liquids and Children’s Motrin say to ask a doctor under 2 years or under 24 lb; Infants’ Motrin says to ask under 6 months. The six store-brand references have their own source labels and remain outside the calculator. A matching ingredient or timing does not authorize substitution, conversion or an alternating schedule.
