Why does infant Tylenol say to ask a doctor under age 2?

The US Infants’ Tylenol liquid shown here contains acetaminophen 160 mg per 5 mL. Its under-2-years or under-24-lb direction is to ask a healthcare provider. The word “infant” does not mean the package supplies an amount for every baby.

Newborn, 5-pound baby or 6-month-old searches

A search for a 5-pound newborn, 6-month-old, 9-month-old, 12-month-old or 18-month-old does not supply the missing label instruction. Do not estimate an amount from a search snippet, divide an older child’s amount or use a higher weight to bypass the age restriction.

What if the baby weighs 24 lb or more?

Weight-first directions do not remove age restrictions. If age and weight point to different rows, clarify which directions apply with the child’s clinician or pharmacist before giving an amount.

Check the package and the supplied device

The supported infant and children’s liquids share a printed strength, but their packaging and directions still need to be checked separately. Other countries, formulations or combination medicines may differ. If a clinician has supplied instructions, confirm them against the exact bottle and its measuring units.
