# Will Tylenol or Motrin help my child’s cough or runny nose?

Canonical URL: https://kintoolkit.com/questions/tylenol-motrin-cough-cold-symptoms

The plain Tylenol and Motrin liquids covered here help with fever and certain minor aches and pains that can come with a cold. Their Uses sections do not list cough suppression or relief of a runny or stuffy nose.

## Why does the bottle mention colds and flu?

The Uses wording connects colds and flu to minor aches and pains. The same lists include headache, toothache and sore throat. That does not turn a single-ingredient pain reliever into a treatment for every cold symptom or the infection itself.

## What if the bottle also says cough, cold or nighttime?

Read every active ingredient. A combination product can contain acetaminophen along with other medicines and has its own age restrictions and directions. Do not add plain acetaminophen to another acetaminophen-containing product. The FDA warns that overlapping ingredients can cause an accidental overdose. These guides cover the four plain liquid bottles shown here, not a combination cold product.

## What can help a stuffy nose without adding another medicine?

The FDA describes saline nose drops or sprays, gentle nasal suction for infants and a cool-mist humidifier as options for nasal symptoms. Drinking enough fluid matters too. For trouble breathing or a child who looks very ill, seek medical care rather than trying another cold product.

Call 911 for severe breathing difficulty or unresponsiveness.

## Does this distinction also apply to a store brand?

The six specific Equate, CVS and Walgreens acetaminophen and ibuprofen liquids in KinToolkit’s reference library list fever reduction and minor pain relief. None of these six labels lists cough or runny-nose relief. Check the exact ingredient, strength and package; the references do not add store-brand calculator support.

## What should I check before following a pain-and-fever chart?

Match the exact bottle and its full Drug Facts. For the supported Tylenol liquids and Children’s Motrin, ask a doctor under 2 years or under 24 lb. For Infants’ Motrin 50 mg/1.25 mL, ask a doctor under 6 months. Read the separate sore-throat warning if throat pain is the reason for use.
