# Should my child take allergy medicine every day or only when symptoms show up?

A package’s daily directions explain the permitted dosing interval and limits; they do not decide how many days or months an individual child needs treatment. The American Academy of Pediatrics says a pediatrician may advise antihistamines regularly or as needed.

## The treatment plan depends on the child’s symptoms

Ask the child’s clinician whether regular or occasional use fits the situation and when to review the plan. Avoid turning a “24 hour” claim into an instruction to take the medicine indefinitely or assuming every new runny nose needs an antihistamine.

## Read the ingredient before discussing long-term use

Cetirizine is the ingredient in the Zyrtec allergy forms shown here and in the three reference-only cetirizine liquids. Claritin liquid contains loratadine. FDA’s warning about severe itching after stopping cetirizine or levocetirizine should not be presented as a loratadine warning.

## What the FDA says about stopping cetirizine

FDA warns of rare but severe itching after stopping oral cetirizine or levocetirizine used daily over a long period, typically months or years. This applies to prescription and over-the-counter forms. Ask a healthcare professional about this risk when considering long-term use, and contact them if severe itching develops after stopping. This page does not provide a taper or a restart plan.

## Why your package and a website might mention different warnings

Current Zyrtec manufacturer pages include an itching-after-stopping warning. Some older DailyMed revisions for the same formulations do not yet include that wording. Check your full package and ask a pharmacist to explain any difference; the absence of the warning from an older record is not proof that the risk is absent.
