# Does my child need fever medicine if they are acting okay?

A child who is comfortable does not automatically need medicine just because the thermometer shows a fever. The American Academy of Pediatrics describes fever medicine as a way to ease discomfort. Age, drinking, breathing and how the child responds to you still matter.

## What should I watch besides the temperature?

Notice whether the child can drink, interacts with you and seems comfortable. Fever can increase fluid loss. Dry mouth, crying without tears and fewer wet diapers can signal dehydration. These observations help you describe what is happening to a clinician; they do not rule out a serious illness.

## When does fever need a call even if my child seems okay?

Call the pediatrician right away for a baby younger than 3 months with a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher. Also seek prompt advice for a child who looks very ill, has unusual drowsiness, breathing difficulty or repeated temperatures above 104°F (40°C). Do not use a reassuring response to medicine as proof that an illness is harmless.

Call 911 for severe breathing difficulty or unresponsiveness.

## What can Tylenol or Motrin actually help with?

The plain liquids shown here are labeled for temporary fever reduction and relief of certain minor aches and pains. They do not determine why the child has a fever. The purpose of checking a label is to identify what it covers, not to decide whether a particular child needs medicine.

## Does the infant name mean the medicine is okay for any baby?

No. The supported Tylenol liquids retain an ask-doctor boundary under 2 years or under 24 lb. Children’s Motrin has that same younger-child boundary; Infants’ Motrin drops say to ask a doctor under 6 months. An age or weight that appears in a chart does not override warnings or a clinician’s instructions.
